Le Lieu de Mémoire
The Lieu de Mémoire is dedicated to the story of the welcome, rescue and resistance by the inhabitants of the plateau around Le Chambon-sur-Lignon during the Second World War.
The temple
Built in the 1820s, the current temple replaces the 1st temple destroyed in 1679 during the Wars of Religion.
The inscription on the pediment “Aimez-vous les uns les autres” (Love one another) recalls the long tradition of hospitality that characterizes the village and the plateau.
It was here, on June 23 1940, that pastors André Trocmé and Edouard Theis called on their parishioners to resist with “the weapons of the spirit”.
